Russia show how to convert an Olympic stadium

Russia has shown the proper way to convert a former Olympic stadium into a permanent home for football.

The Luzhniki Stadium has finished its renovation works ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals.

Russia’s national stadium, which holds 81,000 spectators, is now read for the tournament, where it will host seven matches including the final. The construction works have cost over £300million to convert.

Reconstruction of Russia 2018’s main venue started immediately after the World Championships in Athletics that took place in the summer of 2013. During the process, the Luzhniki was converted into a purely football stadium. The running track disappeared, along with the columns around the upper tier that interrupted sight lines, and the stands became less steep. A viewing platform was installed just beneath the roof of the stadium and the ceiling itself was transformed into a giant media façade.

“It is the least expensive stadium of such a class in the world,” Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin has previously said about the venue. The Luzhniki is the most iconic stadium in Russia, having been initially opened in 1956 and was used during the 1980 Olympics.

Even in row 20 at the LS you still get wet.
I have even felt rain when right at the back of the last week tier.

Any problem goes away when you throw money at it. That’s only going to happen if/when we get new owners.

Why do stands need to be steep?; as long as you can see over the heads in front of you and can see your near touchline.

Timmy: MmuuuM. I’m upset. Got a bit wet at football today. And I wasn’t even in the front row.

Mum: Man up and grow some you little queer. Your dad didn’t moan like that when he stood in the pissing rain in the old half covered south bank. Or stood ankle deep in piss in the blocked up south bank toilets.

Timmy: Stop shouting at me mum.

With this type of layout no mattter how its converted seat wise you'll always have the nose bleed seats that make it look like your watching subuteo.

Yeah but unfortunately they start at Row 1

Abortion of a stadium.

If you want to remain dry when its pissing down then stay at home, otherwise stop whinging about getting soaked when you're sat in the front rows.

I'm not defending anyone, just pointing out that this was a more difficult job than the Russian stadium.

However, regardless of that point, I agree that pretty much everything that has been done could and should have been done better though... starting from when we put our bid in to host the Olympics.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
Our stadium is a shambles scott, no other way to put it, and that's NOT because the LLDC had bigger issues, it's because it was done in a fucking piss poor manner. There is no defence.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
Retractable or not Trevor, whatever term you want to label the seating arrangement, it's a problem they did not have to deal with in Russia. That's the point.

The seating is NOT retractable, scott.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
Trevor

The point is we had a much bigger task trying to convert an athletics stadium into a stadium that could also host football - seeing as we had to have retractable lower seating.

Surely you can see that that is much more difficult in terms of the design than simply gutting out a stadium and then just replacing all of the seating with permanent tiers for football viewing only.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
cant we just knock down the two stands on either side on the pitch and build straight ones over the running track. yes it will look wonky as fuck but at least half the crowd will be closer.
oh and fuck the running track, let them go run around a park or something.

To be fair I think there is only one person to blame in this massive unholy mess... step forward Mr Christmas Jumper wearer of the year 2010-18.... Gavvy

Trevor B 3:34 Thu Feb 22
Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
And neither did the LLDC, I'm not sure what your point is? Before it was rebuilt their seating was as far away from the pitch as ours currently is.
